Healthy Communities of Pierce County

Shaping Healthier Communities Together

Creation of Healthy Communities of Pierce County

In 2005, several physicians in Pierce County became concerned about rapidly increasing rates of childhood obesity. They decided that the medical community should contribute to slowing the growth of obesity. With help from the Physical Activity and Nutrition Proghram of the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department, they formed the Community Health Improvement Committee within the Pierce County Medical Society to increase opportunities for access to affordable, healthy foods and free or low cost physical activity. That committee developed into Healthy Communities of Pierce County (HCPC), which now works to bring together multiple stakeholders in the communities of Pierce County to work towards community-specific projects.

HCPC is an independent non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status from the IRS. Primary funders include the Pierce County Medical Society, Franciscan Health System, and MultiCare. We also receive financial support from many other organizations and individuals as well as grants.

Because our lifestyle choices have a greater effect on our health than our genetics or health care, HCPC works to make healthier choices easier.
