Creation of Healthy Communities of Pierce County

In 2005, several physicians in Pierce County became concerned about the obesity problem. They decided that the medical community should contribute to slowing the growth of obesity. With help from the Physical Activity and Nutrition Proghram of the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department, they formed the Community Health Improvement Committee within the Pierce County Medical Society to increase opportunities for access to affordable, healthy foods and free or low cost physical activity. That committee developed into Healthy Communities of Pierce County, which now works to bring together multiple stakeholders in the communities of Pierce County to work towards community-specific projects.
